Dwight Maitland.. The Magic Man
The Early Years
Born in Clarendon Jamaica, Dwight enjoyed his formative years. Raised by both his mother and father, he enjoyed a healthy upbringing, underpinned by a Christian background. Football was always a stone’s throw away and the ‘Magic Man’ was always happy to catch minutes on the pitch.
In his early years, Dwight who is called ´Chucky’ by his peers, spent time living in South London, Croydon. Much to the chagrin of his family who are still associated with the area, our magician is a staunch Manchester United fan with a piece of his heart in Catalonia.
Ronaldinho
‘ That man brings joy to the game.’’ One could easily sense that Dwight was reliving highlights he may have recently watched on Ronaldinho as he spake. Every few words, was followed by a pause, a grin and shake of the head in awe. The guess is that Barcelona stole a place in his heart because of the exploits of his most revered player, Ronaldinho.
Because of his admiration for Ronaldinho, the midfielder has developed a panache for trickery on the ball. Marry samba and the cool island breezes of Jamaica and you have the ‘Magic Man’, Chucky.
Bouncing Back
Dominating youth football in Clarendon Jamaica, Chucky found success at the U16 level securing a trophy for Clarendon College. Rising up the ranks, Bushy Park United came calling. Division 1 football (soccer) was one step away from playing Premier League football, so the competition was high.
Years passed seeing Chucky make his home in the United States. With his experience playing Jamaica, the transition was smooth. Another trophy was to be won in the Connecticut Club Soccer League with Bridgeport Premier at the U19 level coupled with success in the New York Club Soccer League.
Horror Struck
Horror struck just when Chucky was at the gilded hem of success. After a good showing at the Hartford Athletic open tryouts, The Magic Man was preselected. A year of doubt, pain and regret soon followed after Chucky suffered multiple injuries to the same left knee. ACL, MCL and meniscus damage, slowed the tricky midfielder.
It was his faith and support from family and friends that propped him up in a trying time. His favorite quote: ‘ Phil 4:13- I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ shone in his mind like a beacon. A year of arduous therapy and pain soon passed seeing the Magic Man reappear on the scene, even remarking at how books like ‘ How Successful People Think- John C. Maxwell’ impacted him during a tough time.
On a lighter note!
‘Jamaica? Nuh muss di beach dem. Mi miss di beach dem a yaad man. Favourite food? Fish! Steam fish man.’’
‘I always anted to be a lawyer and you may be surprised but I really like singing.’’
A change of mind and a change of diet has helped transform a young player into a formidable player who is again ready to pursue his dream of playing professionally. Learn more about Dwight ‘Chucky’ Maitland is this season’s United Premier Soccer League.
