Diogo Cruz: Calma!

Diogo always seems to be floating while on the ball in midfield. Who says you have to be a bull to dominate a midfield? Calm in demeanor and poise, Diogo takes over in Cruz-Control. What a player!

His roots stem from a long family history rooted in support of Benfica, a club that defeated Barcelona in 1961 to lift their first European title. Eusebio, Saviola, and Angel Di Maria are a few notable names that have made the Aguia Vitoria proud.

Favorite Player

It’s easy to mention Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi when asked to comment on the goat debate but Diogo took the time to reflect on his answer.

I like Cristiano because of his work ethic, his mentality and overall attitude. I remember his drive when he scored that header, I think versus Chelsea in 2008 in the Champions League final. I don’t quite remember clearly but I think it was before he went to Real Madrid. Don’t quote me on that.

Diogo: Thé early years

Born in Danbury Connecticut, Diogo spent a year living in Lisbon as an infant. Following this, Naugatuck Connecticut became his home from the 3rd grade through high school.

Mr. Calma had a decent upbringing. In spite of his parents’ separating, he made the best of it and embraced his stepmother whom he affectionately calls mom. Poverty was never an issue, but life had its challenges that a middle income home had to bear.

Life on the pitch

The Albertus Magnus graduate enjoyed steering his team as captain in his senior year. His most memorable season saw his team battle against the odds and expectation to reach the GNAC conference final, narrowly losing 1–0 to Johnson & Wales University after back to back comeback performances in previous games.

The Falcon, Diogo, much like Albertus Magnus, is quite cerebral as evidenced in his play. His first taste of overwhelming success came in 2013 as he led his high school, Naugatuck H.S., to an unprecedented undefeated season in the Naugatuck Valley League. This was followed up by another triumph in 2014.

Other teams that enjoyed his services are Polonia Falcons (Connecticut Soccer League) and Albion FC Delaware (NISA Nation & EPSL).

Favorite Food

Bitoque, is a classic Portuguese dish that is simply a steak drizzled with a butter pan sauce and topped with a fried egg.

If I were to say anything about hidden talents it would be that I can cook my own food and I love ping pong. Sometimes at work someone would roll out a ping pong table. I’ve even played ping pong with my phone as a paddle.

Diogo’s calm demeanor is reassuring. It’s not to be mistaken for an idle or lethargic appearance. This can be evidenced in his favorite quote. We look forward to seeing much more of Diogo’s skill during our UPSL season.

Dedication is hard work plus patience.
